SelfStudy

Hey Team,

I hope you have all survived the storm reasonably well, and that you all have what you need at this time. If not, or if you know someone who may have a need that our class could meet, please let me know.

Song of Solomon (for students)

As we have discussed, our class is going to pay for the Song of Solomon Bible study for students by Tommy Nelson. Jeff plans to provide this study for our youth and we will donate the series to the church. We will take up a special offering this Sunday for that purpose. If you want to write a check you can make it payable to the church.

Nursery

Thanks to those of you who have already signed up to work in the nursery in February. This is such an important ministry for our entire church. We still have a few more spots that we need to fill. Also, if you sign up and cannot work that Sunday, please find a replacement. Thanks!

Sunday School

O.K., by now I know that some of you have seen the "video" of my misguided, delusional, "what in the world was I thinking?" attempt of doing whatever it was that I did in Sunday School last week (thanks a lot, Joelette and Mike). Since we are contemplating a ban on all recording devices, you will have to be there in person to make sure you don't miss anything in the future. Don't worry, I have no plans to sing, rap, or otherwise make a fool of myself this Sunday (although that sometimes happens regardless of my plans). Bottom line: we hope to see you Sunday and we miss you when you are not there.
Press on....
Andrew

FW: Weather Update - ICE STORM Warning!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Sigler, Penny
Date: Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Subject: FW: Weather Update - ICE STORM Warning!
This originated from the Christian Co. Emergency Management director. Read his statement at the bottom. They're predicting a really bad ice storm beginning tonight.
---------------------------
Good Morning Everyone,

We have a dire weather situation facing us so I'll get right to it. It now appears that our worst fears are about to be realized in the form of an ice storm. This will be a fairly long update so you will need to read it through. The following is a public information statement issued a little bit ago from the National Weather Service.....

...SIGNIFICANT WINTER WEATHER EVENT EXPECTED TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY
NIGHT...

THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF ICE...SLEET
AND SNOW ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...SOUTHERN ILLINOIS...SOUTHWEST
INDIANA AND WESTERN KENTUCKY TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT.

THIS EVENT WILL LIKELY CREATE A MAJOR IMPACT ON TRAVEL...UTILITIES
AND FOR BUSINESSES AND SCHOOLS.

TWO ROUNDS ARE ANTICIPATED. THE FIRST WILL BE TONIGHT...WITH A BRIEF
LULL TUESDAY MORNING...FOLLOWED BY A SECOND SURGE TUESDAY AFTERNOON
AND EARLY EVENING. THE FIRST ROUND WILL IMPACT THE ENTIRE AREA.
ROUND TWO WILL AS WELL...BUT GREATER AMOUNTS OF PRECIPITATION WILL
BE A BIT FARTHER SOUTH INTO WEST KENTUCKY.

THE FOLLOWING SUMMARY FORECAST INFORMATION IS BASED ON THE LATEST
DATA AVAILABLE...AND COULD BE MODIFIED PRIOR TO THE EVENT AS NEWER
FORECAST INFORMATION COMES IN.

SNOW AND OCCASIONALLY SLEET ARE FORECAST TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY
NIGHT ACROSS NORTHERN PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...SOUTHERN
ILLINOIS AND SOUTHWEST INDIANA. WIDESPREAD 4 TO 8 INCH SNOW AND
SLEET ACCUMULATIONS APPEAR LIKELY. THERE MAY BE BANDS OF HIGHER
ACCUMULATION WHERE SNOW IS MORE PREVALENT...POSSIBLY IN THE 8 TO 10
INCH RANGE. IF MORE SLEET FALLS AT ANY GIVEN LOCATION...TOTAL
DEPTH MAY BE SLIGHTLY LOWER.

FARTHER SOUTH INTO WESTERN KENTUCKY...THE SOUTHERN TIP OF ILLINOIS
AND SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI...THE CONCERN IS WITH
FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET. SEVERAL MODELS ARE PROJECTING TOTAL LIQUID
EQUIVALENT AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES...WHICH COULD TRANSLATE INTO
SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF ICE AND/OR SLEET. THE BEST CHANCE
FOR SIGNIFICANT ICING SHOULD BE ALONG A LINE FROM NEW MADRID
MISSOURI...TO MAYFIELD KENTUCKY...ACROSS THE KENTUCKY LAKES REGION
AND EAST TO MADISONVILLE...GREENVILLE AND HOPKINSVILLE. IN THIS
AREA...ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF AT LEAST 1/2 TO 1 INCH CANNOT BE RULED
OUT. JUST NORTH OF THERE...FROM SAY CAPE GIRARDEAU...EAST ALONG THE
OHIO RIVER INCLUDING PADUCAH...TO CALHOUN KENTUCKY...THERE MAY BE
SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF SLEET...ALONG WITH OCCASIONAL FREEZING
RAIN AT TIMES. THERE COULD BE AT LEAST 2 TO 4 INCHES OF SLEET AND
PERHAPS A LITTLE SNOW...ALONG WITH ICING NEAR OR ABOVE 1/4 INCH.

THE MERE FACT THE MODEL DATA IS FORECASTING SUCH HIGH AMOUNTS
OF LIQUID EQUIVALENT PRECIPITATION IN THE 1 TO 2 INCH RANGE...IS
SIGNIFICANT. POWER OUTAGES MAY BECOME LIKELY...WHERE SIGNIFICANT ICE
IS EXPECTED. TRAVEL IMPACTS COULD BE VERY SIGNIFICANT. SCHOOLS AND
OTHER PRE-PLANNED EVENTS WILL LIKELY BE CANCELLED.

HERE ARE TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE...DURING AND AFTER A WINTER STORM...

BEFORE THE STORM...

MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE IS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. CHECK THE
ANTIFREEZE AND WINDSHIELD WASHER LEVELS IN YOUR CAR AND FILL AS
NEEDED. MAKE SURE YOUR WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE AND THE
TIRES ARE PROPERLY INFLATED. BE SURE TO PACK A CAR SAFETY KIT THAT
INCLUDES FLASHLIGHTS...SAFETY TRIANGLES OR FLARES...BLANKETS AND NON
PERISHABLE FOOD...SHOULD YOUR CAR BECOME DISABLED. IF YOU HAVE A
CELL PHONE OR OTHER COMMUNICATION DEVICE...CHARGE IT UP NOW AND KEEP
IT WITH YOU...SHOULD YOU BECOME STRANDED ON THE ROAD.

IF AT HOME...MAKE SURE YOUR HEATING SYSTEM IS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER.
GATHER TOGETHER YOUR HOME WEATHER PREPAREDNESS KIT AND MAKE SURE IT
IS WELL STOCKED. KEEP FLASHLIGHTS...FRESH BATTERIES...BLANKETS...NON
PERISHABLE FOOD...WATER AND OTHER NECESSITIES ON HAND THAT YOU MAY
NEED SHOULD THE ELECTRIC POWER GO OUT. CHECK ON YOUR FAMILY AND
NEIGHBORS...ESPECIALLY THOSE PERSONS THAT ARE ELDERLY OR INFIRMED TO
MAKE SURE THEY ARE OK. IF YOU HAVE PETS OR LIVESTOCK...MAKE
PREPARATIONS FOR SHELTER...FOOD AND WATER...BEFORE CONDITIONS
OUTDOORS WORSEN FOR THE ANIMALS.

DURING THE STORM...

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL...STAY AT HOME. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...DO
NOT DRIVE FASTER THAN THE CONDITIONS ALLOW AND GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY
OF TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION. DO NOT BRAKE OR STOP ABRUPTLY
AND GIVE A WIDE BERTH WHEN APPROACHING EMERGENCY VEHICLES...HIGHWAY
TRUCKS CLEARING OR TREATING ROADWAYS...AND LARGE VEHICLES.

IF YOU ARE AT HOME OR WORK AND THE ELECTRIC POWER GOES OUT...USE
CAUTION WHEN USING CANDLES...PORTABLE HEATING UNITS OR FIREPLACES.
DO NOT PLACE ANY OBJECTS THAT COULD EASILY CATCH FIRE NEAR AN OPEN
FLAME OR INTENSE HEAT. KEEP SMALL CHILDREN AND PETS A SAFE DISTANCE
FROM HEAT SOURCES. IF THE WATER LINES IN YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS ARE
PRONE TO FREEZING...ALLOW THE WATER FROM THE FAUCETS TO SLOWLY DRIP.

IF POWER LINES OR TREE LIMBS FALL DUE TO THE ACCUMULATION OF ICE
NEAR YOUR DWELLING...STAY AWAY FROM THE POWER LINES AND DAMAGED TREES
DURING THE STORM. YOU COULD BE ELECTROCUTED OR HURT BY FALLING TREE
LIMBS. STAY INSIDE AND REPORT ANY DOWNED LINES TO THE UTILITY
COMPANIES.

AFTER THE STORM...

USE CAUTION WHILE WORKING OUTDOORS...CHANGES IN THE WIND AND
TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE MAY CAUSE ICE AND SNOW TO FALL FROM TREES AND
OTHER ELEVATED OBJECTS...LEADING TO ADDITIONAL DAMAGE TO POWER
LINES AND DWELLINGS.

WALK AND DRIVE WITH CAUTION...ROADS AND SIDEWALKS WILL STILL REMAIN
SLICK WELL AFTER THE WINTER PRECIPITATION HAS LEFT THE AREA.

AS ALWAYS...KEEP POSTED ON THE LATEST WEATHER DEVELOPMENTS BY
LISTENING TO N O A A WEATHER RADIO...COMMERCIAL TELEVISION AND
RADIO.
The tips given in the statement cannot be overemphasized. If this situation does materialize, it will rival or surpass the 1994 ice storm. Residents should make final preparations NOW! Be prepared for loss of power and mobility. Roadways will quickly become impossible to navigate once the precipitation begins this evening. So residents will need to be where they will stay until the storm subsides sometime overnight Tuesday. I expect a conference call with the National Weather Service to take place sometime today. We will provide further details on this very serious weather situation as it becomes available. In the meantime, remember the three P's...Plan Prepare and Pray.

S.S.

Hey Team,

It was great to see all 46 of you who were in Sunday School last week. While we don't want to get hung up on counting "noses," we do celebrate each time that each individual is involved in some type of Bible Study, Christian fellowship, etc.

If you haven't been in a while, it is a great time to start back as we begin a new unit by Dr. James MacDonald about personal revival from his book, Downpour.

Hope to see you Sunday. In the meantime, I want to share with you some wisdom from Chuck Swindoll (see below).

Press on.
Andrew

"I'm going to hit the gym at 5:30 every morning, and I'll start tomorrow." "I'm going to clean out and organize the garage and keep it spotless from now on." "I'm going to give up French fries . . . for good this time!"

I love the old saying, "A New Year's resolution goes in one year and out the other." How true! We always begin a new year with the best intentions, making resolutions to change this or stop that. But no matter how hard we try, even the best choices fall by the wayside, ready to be picked up again the following January.

This year, let's do something different. Rather than making the same old promises we're sure to break, let's explore the way Jesus lived on earth. His example can be summarized in one simple sentence: "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men" (Luke 2:52 NIV).

Did you catch those four specific areas? Jesus grew intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially. And if our ultimate goal is to become like Him, we need to mature in each of these four characteristics as well.

I was fortunate enough to spend several years studying at Dallas Theological Seminary under the tutelage of Dr. Howard Hendricks. The mentor and friend I affectionately call "Prof" motivated me to grow in every area of my life, to seek balance and a godly perspective, and to pursue Christ with every thought and action. I value his teaching greatly. And his challenge still deeply resonates with me today, so much so that I'd like to share with you a few of his wise words that I remember well:

You cannot fully develop spiritually unless you develop in life's other areas as well—intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally. You cannot neglect one of these areas without endangering your growth in all of them. Likewise, you cannot grow in any one of these areas without also having an effect on all the others.

Let's start this year with a realistic resolution. Let's highlight some areas of our lives where we can grow intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially

S.S,

Hey Team,

What's on you mind today?

As we conclude our study of Ephesians 4 this Sunday, remember that our progress in the process of spiritual transformation depends in large part on the focus of our minds, thoughts and attitudes. So, what's on your mind today?

Shower Invitation (Women only)

All women are invited to attend a bridal shower for Mike and Joelette Woolfolk's daughter, Angie, this Saturday, January 10, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the home of John and Beth Peck, 643 Hurl Way. The event is being hosted by Beth, Jennifer Meacham, Lisa Powell, Sherrie Smith, Pat Stevenson, and Eva Self. Angie is registered at Town and Country, Gracious Me and Walmart.

New Sunday School Class

I am a big proponent of starting new Sunday School classes in an effort to reach as many people as possible. This Sunday, a new couples class will begin at FBC. The class will be taught by Jack and Bettye Ferrell and will be in Room 119 in the basement (just down the hall from our class). If you or anyone you know may be interested in this class, I want to encourage you to attend, invite, and promote as you feel led. Thanks to Jack and Bettye for taking on this challenge.

Press on.
