Update on Jen Gary

Jen's surgery went well on Tuesday.

They removed 12 inches of her colon, they did not have to remove her gall bladder or appendix. She is feeling pretty good, just very sore. She will probably be there about 3 days. She is in room 808 at Jennie Stuart.

SelfStudy - "We saw your smoke signal"

Hey Team!

David Jeremiah tells a story about a shipwreck survivor who washed up on a deserted island. After he had been there a few days, he built himself a hut and prayed to God for rescue. Each day he anxiously looked out over the horizon as he waited for God's delieverance in the form of a passing ship. One day, after returning from a hunt for food, he discovered that his hut was consumed in flames. He was devastated and believed it to be the worst thing that could have happened to him on the island; everything he had was gone. The next day, however, a ship arrived and the captain said, "We saw your smoke signal."

Sometimes, when there seems to be little or no hope, or when things seem to be going against us, it is difficult to believe that God is still with us. But then He unfolds His plan and His provision and reminds us that He had it under control the whole time. Remember, His ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8).

"Keep praying, but be thankful that God's answers are wiser than your prayers." -- William Culbertson

Hope to see you Sunday!

Prayer Request - Jeff Sisk's mom, Bonnie Sisk

Andrew,

Jeff Sisk's mom, Bonnie Sisk, was just taken to Jennie Stuart by ambulance. I'm not sure what is wrong with her. Dawn is going to call later and let us know what her status is. I just wanted to get some prayers for everyone involved.

I will update when I know more.

Thanks, Mike.

Henry Smith served as inspiration...

Services Thursday for councilman, Henry Smith served as inspiration
We have lost a great man in Caldwell County....Randy

Story: http://www.timesleader.net/articles/stories/public/200801/23/04GD_news.html

Many of you probably know of Mr. Smith, and his two sons who played for WKU, and NBA , Dwight and Greg:

During his two decades of service in the local schools, Smith made his mark with scores of students and educators.

"Each of us recognizes what a tremendous inspiration Mr. Henry was — to our kids, to our staff, and to our entire community," declared Carrell Boyd, Caldwell County School Superintendent.

SelfStudy - "Moral Earthquakes and Secret Faults"

Hey Team:

D-Now is one of the most exciting and most important weekends in the life of our church and community. Many youth -- churched and unchurched -- will be participating. Many will have the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord for the first time. Others will have the opportunity to grow in their faith and strengthen their commitment to Him. Let's pray for Jeff and the other youth pastors, those who will be leading the small groups, the host families, and, of course, for the students who will be participating.

Let's also continue to pray for Dr. Gardner as he provides essential leadership for our church during this interim period. Without question, this is a great opportunity for us as a church to assess, evaluate, dream, and prepare for what lies ahead. Let's don't miss this opportunity, and let's support Dr. Gardner as he leads. Also, if you have not been attending worship services recently, you are missing one of the most effective, gifted preachers you will ever hear.

Finally, as we continue our study in S.S. on "Moral Earthquakes and Secret Faults," this Sunday we are going to discuss sex (i.e. sexual immorality). We're going to divide up into groups -- Eva is going to lead the women, and the men are still stuck with me. Hope to see you there.

"Facing the Giants''

Andrew's Dallas Cowboys came close this year, and had a great season. I have to get at him that my team, Green Bay, and 'old man' Brett Favre is still going.

I found an interesting story that I wanted to share, both football and faith. They don't come more earnest than KGB, whose intense Christian faith and gift of gab are simply facts of life in the Green Bay Packers' locker room.

Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (KGB), handed out 300 DVDs to teammates, coaches and staff in the offeseason. The name of the film? "Facing the Giants.''

"FACING THE GIANTS is a great movie about how God can change lives on and off the football field. Every family in America should see it."

SelfStudy - Sunday School Class

Hey Team:

The Russian novelist and theologian, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, once wrote that, "The line that divides good from evil is not a line that separates good men from bad men, but rather a line that cuts through the middle of the human heart." So, what does that mean? I believe it means that within each of us is the capacity to do good as well as the capacity to do "evil" -- the capacity to engage in moral and/or immoral behavior.

That's what we're going to be talking about as we begin our new unit this Sunday entitled, "Moral Eathquakes and Secret Faults." I hope you will be able to join us as we delve into this issue which will certainly have practical, relevant application to our lives.

As Dr. Laida used to say, "Remember to say a good word about our Lord, and about our church."

Hope to see you soon.

Dr. Travis - New Computer & Email Address

Hello,

Just got through helping Dr. Travis get his & Sue's Christmas present setup,
..a new Dell Desktop Computer!

Man, I have to tell you, he has really took a jump on technology. He had a Windows98 Dell, and now has a shiny (it really is), Intel Duo Core / Vista Premium machine! He is ready for all the photos and movies he & Sue can throw at it.

Please take note of his new email address below, and keep in touch.

SelfStudy - ""Seven Words to Change Your Family."

Hey Team:

This Sunday we will conclude our study on ""Seven Words to Change Your Family." I am continuing to think about and process our last lesson on "Commitment." I want to make sure that I am not like the multitudes who were just "going along" (Luke 14:25) with Jesus. Instead, I want my commitment to Him to be my first and most important priority -- even above family. As we discussed, this is necessary if I hope to be the kind of husband, father, and friend that He wants me to be.

I thought Dr. Gardner's sermon ("Ships That Didn't Sail") was the perfect capstone to our study on commitment. So often as we make commitments our "ships don't sail." Perhaps it is because we never really intended them to sail, or because we procrastinate and are content with the status quo, or perhaps because the enemy destroy our ships.

Whatever the reason, Dr. Gardner reminded us that we need to (1) Remember who we are (sinners saved by God's grace); (2) Recharge our batteries by regularly assembling with other believers; (3) Head for deeper waters (i.e. take more risks); and (4) Don't wait! ("some day" and "one of these days" will eventually disappear from our vocabulary).

Please continue to pray for Dr. Gardner, our staff and our pastor search committee.

Please also continue to pray for Dr. Travis and Sue, and remember the reception to be held in their honor this Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the church.

SelfStudy - A few things to remember...

Hey Team!

A few things to remember:

1. This Sunday marks Dr. Garnder's first "official" Sunday as our interim pastor. I know you will want to be there to hear him and to support him;

2. This Sunday is also Dr. Travis' first "official" Sunday as our former pastor. He will be conducting a baptismal service in the morning worship service and presiding over the deacon ordination service in the evening, but I'm sure it will be different for him and he too needs our love, encouragement and support;

3. A formal reception will be held for Dr. Travis and Sue on the afternoon of January 13. If you would like to contribute to a love offering for them, we will have an envelope in our S.S. class this Sunday for that purpose; and

4. Our Pastor Search Committee has begun its work. Please pray for the committee, our church, and the man God has for FBC.

Hope to see you Sunday!
