Prayer Request -- UPDATE on Jen Gary

Mark Gary called this morning (Wed) and asked that I share the lasted update on Jen with you so you could share it with the class. She had a colonoscopy this morning and they found that she has acute diverticulitis. For now they are now treating her with antibiotics then she will have to decide if she wants to have surgery on her colon at a later date or not.

They were relieved this morning to find out what it was. She is still at JSMC and may get to go home tonight if she is able to keep her food down. Today will be the first time she has eaten since 6pm Sunday night. Mark and the kids are doing pretty good.

They appreciate your prayers and asked that you continue to pray for her.

Andrew,
Thank you for sending the e-mail out. It has been a very difficult Christmas for the kids and I. Just giving you an update on Jen's condition. They have scheduled a colonosopy for early a.m. on Wed depending on her white blood cell count. We are praying they can treat it medication but there is a chance for surgery. The kids have had a good day so far but it is tough with mom not here. We are taking alot of gifts to the hospital this morning to have Christmas with Jen. Thank you and the class for your prayers and concern. I will call or e-mail you when I know more.

Prayer Request - Jen Gary in the Hospital

Hey Team:

Debbie Gary called this morning (as did Kim Batts) to let me know that Jen Gary is in the hospital. They have ruled out several things but still do not know what has caused pain in her side and other problems. Right now they have admitted her to the hospital and started her on intravenous antibiotics. It sounds like she will be in the hospital for at least a couple of days.

Please remember Jen, Mark and their family in you prayers. Debbie said that she has the children and will let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Press on....

Please add my uncle, Donnie McIntosh, to your prayer list. He has had a few strokes since Sunday and the family was called in yesterday. Please pray for the Lord's will in this situation and reassurance for my Dad and his brothers that the whole situation is in the Lord's hands.

He is at JSMC on the 5th floor and is being taken care of by a wonderful team of nurses and doctors. We have already seen the Lord at work through the outstanding nurses and Doctors yesterday when he took a turn for the worse.

Need for Bikes - Family in Need

Please contact me by email or phone if you can help, and I will get back with Amy..Thanks guys!

==============

Hi Randy,

The Pennyrile Child Advocacy Center has a family, a mother and her four daughters who are in need of some Christmas help. The ladies at the center say the mother is providing as best she can for the girls, she's working, even putting on roofs and siding this month at various jobs to help make ends meet. There is no dad in the picture and right now no Christmas without assistance. They tell me the family is humble and grateful for anything….maybe if we can't get new ones, with our resources we could find four used bikes to donate to them. We're talking about a size for 7-10 year olds and one with training wheels. They also need coats and jackets….sizes 7-8 for three girls and 10/12 for one girl. Derrick and I are trying to get some other things together—the center has already provided a Christmas meal for the family.

Self Study - Andrew

Hey Team!

It sounds like both Mike Stewart's mother (heart valve replacement) and Tory Pinson's father (triple by-pass) are doing well after surgeries yesterday. Please continue to remember these families in your prayers.

A few announcements:
1. Class Christmas party at our house tomorrow (Friday) beginning at 6:00 p.m.;
2. This Sunday morning is our "Christmas Gift for Christ" offering. This is an opportunity for folks to catch up on their tithe and.or to give a special offering (e.g. building fund);
3. Adult Choir Christmas musical is Sunday night at 6:00 p.m.; and
4. December 19 is a family night with food, caroling and games (you don't have to go caroling) -- it will be a lot of fun.

Lots to do. Don't let all the activity and "to do" lists rob you of the joy of the season. What matters is that Jesus Christ was born and we all have many, many reasons to give thanks.

Press on....Andrew

"Let's Say Thanks"

Do you think your school or business could send this around?
Some classrooms are sending them...Randy

=================================

Something cool that Xerox is doing ~!
If you go to this web site, http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq . You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.

How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!! This is a great site. Please send a card. It is FREE and it only takes a second.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind them...

Messages from our troops:
I received a package and a postcard from a young lady named Anna and the card is said to of been made by Mrs. Caudill's Third Grade Class from Johnson Magnet School in San Diego CA. I would just like for a message to go to them that I loved the package that was sent and that I really appreciate all the support we are getting over here. Thank you.

I want to say thanks for your support of military troops. I received two cards with kind words from Nikita in California and Marisa in New Jersey. The beautiful artwork was done by Elizabeth in Silver Springs, MD and Asia in Jacksonville, NC. I am assigned to the USS Enterprise and we are at sea. Please keep us in your prayers.

I would like to express my gratitude for the card from the Let’s Say Thanks program. I received a card with a drawing made by Rebecca, Age 11, from Hobe Sound, FL and a very nice message from Jerry and JoAnn, from Yukon, Rhode Island. It is incredibly uplifting to receive messages like this and brings a smile to our faces to know that these wonderful people took the time to do something for us. This card was in a package that included many items needed for day to use and of course, the snacks were good too! It is a big deal and we are all very appreciative for the things you all do for us while we are deployed.

Hey Andrew,

I wanted to ask for prayer for my mom. I am taking her to Centennial Medical Center in the morning for an arteriogram. If everything goes okay with that, she will have surgery Wednesday to repair a leaking valve in her heart. I would appreciate everyone keeping her and my family in their prayers.

Thanks, Mike.

Taylor Doss & Family

Hey everyone,

I don't have time to call everyone and tell you this, but I wanted to pass this information on to you so you will know what's going on. Taylor Doss's stepdad passed away early this morning from complications in a surgery he had a few weeks ago. Please keep her, Emily and the rest of the family in your prayers.

Jeff

Prayer - Connie Jones (Jeff''s Mom)

Hey guys,

Do me a favor and keep my mom in prayer. She went in this morning to find out why she had an irregular heartbeat and they found out she is a walking heart attack waiting to happen. Therefore they have to try and find where the blockage is in another procedure tomorrow afternoon. If the doctor doesn't like what he finds, she may have to get a pacemaker put in. This is very strange to us because she had no symptoms. Her name is Connie Jones and she is in Macon, GA. Please keep her in prayer.

Thanks,

12/19 Caroling Event

Below is an email from L.A. Stewart and others who are planning an awesome "caroling event" for our church family on 12/19. Instead of our regular Wednesday night meal, we will be serving sandwiches to those who come. Hence, the request below. Thanks, L.A. and others!
By the way, you don't have to actually go caroling to participate. We are going to have fun, food and games (literally), and in between we will dispatch several teams of carolers led by our children's choir (think about how much fun it would be to caroling with Colin Sturdivant, Tyler Wolf, Elli Buckingham, Gracie Meacham, etc.). If you want to go with one of the teams, great. If not, you can wait at fellowship hall and help prepare for their return when the games (and more food) will be in full swing.
This promises to be a fun time of fellowship. I have a feeling that if you participate you will be glad you did, and if you don't . . . well, let's not find out.
Press on.

Kim Batts recently requested assistance from our class in preparing sandwiches for the 12/19 church caroling event. After some discussion, it was determined that it would be much more simple to collect monetary donations and purchase subs from Wal-Mart. If possible, please have a little extra "pocket change" this Sunday, Dec. 9th. We'll be passing the basket in Sunday School! THANKS in advance for your support!

SelfStudy/Interim Pastor

Hey Team!

I am thrilled to tell you that the deacons unanimously voted last night to present Dr. David Gardner to the church as our interim pastor. Pursuant to our by-laws, the church will vote on this recommendation at our next business meeting on December 12.

As many of you know, Dr. Gardner is a former pastor at FBC (approx. 1977 - 1984). He is an experienced, mature pastor and one of the most gifted preachers I have ever heard. I love him and I am confident he will be a tremendous blessing to our church during this time of transition. Perhaps most importantly, he has a great love and concern for our church. He specifically mentioned this recently when we began discussing this interim position with him. There is no one else in the world that I would rather have for this position at this time.

We are continuing our study of "Sevem Words to Change Your Family" this week by studying "Blessing." I appreciate the good, candid discussion we had last Sunday regarding "Forgiveness." I pray that we would all continue to realize how important that concept is for our families, and in all of our relationships.

The countdown is on for our annual Christmas Party on December 14 at the Selfs. The festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. and should be over within a reasonable period of time. Feel free to bring friends and/or prospects for our class.

See you soon.

We have very good news to share about Jerry.

The doctors were very pleased with what they saw. They removed one Adrenal Gland, and the tumor by the Aorta. There were no other organs involved.

They think it is benign, however the pathology report will tell us for sure. They do not think Jerry will have to undergo any chemo or radiation.

We have guarded optimism for a full recovery.
We will share more information when we receive the reports.

Thanks to everyone for the phone calls, cards, and especially the prayers.
The power of prayer truly is tremendous.

It's About Every Student Every Day

Self Study - Andrew

Hey Team:

I hope the study we just completed on "The Treasure Principle" (i.e. "you can't take it with you, but you can send it on ahead") has been helpful to you. It has certainly made me think about my responsibility as a Christian to generously share the blessings God has given to me with others. To what extent am I "laying up treasures in heaven" by the way I handle my finances? Is my financial focus just on me, my family (just as problematic in my opinion), or am I also taking into consideration the poor, the weak, etc.?

Bottom line: how we handle our money and possessions in this life is not a financial matter, it is a spritual matter. I pray that when we give an account of this area of our lives that He will say, "Well done, though good and faithful servant." I'm not there yet, but I'm going to press on!

This Sunday we will begin a new unit entitled, "Seven Words To Change Your Family." Wow, what a title! I plan to be there to find out what those seven words are -- and I pray you will also.
This Sunday is also the first Sunday of the month so we will take up our class offering.

Please make plans to attend our S.S. class Christmas party at the Selfs on December 14 at 6:00 p.m. (C.E.L.E. -- "come early, leave early").

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.....

-------------
Psalm 100
Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands!

Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.

Know that the LORD, He is God;

It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;

We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.

Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

Hey Team!

I love the lyrics to the song, "Give Thanks":

Give thanks,
With a grateful heart;

Give thanks,
To the Holy One

Give thanks,
Because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son.

And now,

Let the weak say I am strong;

Let the poor say I am rich;

Because of what the Lord has done,

For us.
Give thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours

Hey Team:

Let's continue to remember to pray for and encourage Dr. Travis and Sue as they prepare for a time of transition. Isn't it great to know that they intend to continue to be apart of the FBC family?

We will not be having a special business meeting this Sunday evening as previously announced. Additional time is needed before anything is presented to the church. However, you may be interested to know what the process will be as we move forward. According to our by-laws, when the church does not have a pastor:

1. The deacon officers shall nominate a Pastor Search Committee, with the approval of the active deacon body, for election by the church; and

2. The deacon officers shall recommend an interim pastor and/or nominate a Pulpit Supply Committee, with the approval of the active deacon body, for church approval.

Please be in prayer for our deacon officers: Clay Smith - chairman; Mike Beck - Vice Chairman; and Ted Wilson - Secretary.

Don't forget our annual S.S. Christmas Party at the Selfs on December 14. Our theme for this year ("Come Early; Leave Early") has been so well accepted by everyone that I thought we might make up some T-shirts for the event. Since T-shirts have a shelf life of anywhere from 12 - 20 years, we shouldn't have to make any new T-shirts until most of us retire. What do you think?

Press on.

Ray Wilson - Update on our Family/HHS Boys Soccer

Randy,
I didn't realize that Mr. Wilson, across the street, was having health problems. Lets put him on the prayer list.

Thanks,
Rob Turner

All,

I'm not sure if you all know but last Thursday night was a very emotional night for Coach Wilson. Below is an update from Heath and Paige on his dad. This surgery was not a planned surgery for Heath's dad when he went to the hospital last Thursday. I am asking that each of you keep this sweet family in prayer and ask God to heal Ray and give his family the strength they need to get through this time. I would like to include Heath's parents address and ask that each family if you can find the time to send his dad a card. I know it will be a great day for him when he does return home to Hopkinsville but it will be even brighter when he returns to open all the prayers and well wishes letting him know we have been praying and thinking of him during his stay in the hospital.

Please address cards to:

Ray Wilson
518 Ashbury Court
Hopkinsville, Ky 42240

Thanks again for your time.

Thanks,
Kelly

Kelly,

Ray had a double bypass on Thursday afternoon. Everything went good with the surgery but it has been a long weekend. He has been in a whole lot of pain and he can't breath very well. They had tried to stand him up a couple of times and every time he loses a lot of blood. They think they have that under control now but he still is in alot of pain. They are going to take out his chest tube today but they have warned us already that it will be very painful for him. Heath and I were at the hospital all day yesterday and he had a pretty good day. Last night was rough again and I think we are going to stay the night with him tonight so Gay and Wendy can have a break. It has just been a very emotional and tiring weekend. Hopeful by the end of today they will try walking again, so please pray that it goes well this time.

Heath and I want to thank all of you for you concern and your prayers. Please continue to keep Ray and the rest of our family in your prayers. We also just wanted to say thank you for a great season. Heath and I enjoyed getting to know all the players and parents. The guys played great this year and I know Heath is very proud of them.

I hope all of you are doing well and thank you again for everything.

Sincerely,

Heath & Paige

I just wanted to send this to some of you on my mailing list to give you some information and ask for your prayers. My son, Jerry (one of the twins) has been diagnosed with Cancer. It is Pheochromocytoma.....a cancer of the adrenal gland. However, the Doctors have found another site, which is larger, near, but not in the adrenal gland that they seem to be more concerned about and do not believe that it is the same cancer. There has to be a lots of preparation before they can do any surgery and so he is scheduled for December 3 in Miami, Fla. I'll try to keep you posted about him as news comes in. TT

S.S.

Hey Team:

I always like to know what is going on; to not miss anything that is happening around me. For example:

1. Last summer while we were on vacation, I very much regretted not being at church the morning my friend, Paige Morris, made her public profession of faith;

2. A week or so ago, I was glad I was in Sunday School when Mike Stewart shared an absolutely hilarious story about a recent family vacation;

3. This past Sunday, I wanted to be there to express my love and support to Dr. Travis and Sue as they announced their future plans; and

4. I'm glad I went to the church picnic where we shared a great time of fellwoship, and got to hear our man, Derrick Watson, do his thing with his guitar (great job, D.W.!).

I don't know what's going to happen this Sunday, but I know I don't want to miss it. Hope to see you there!

Press on.

S.S.

Hey Team:

A couple of "housekeeping" matters and then I want to share a story from Chuck Swindoll (kind of long) which I hope you will read:

1.  Don't forget our church picnic this Sunday at Jefferson Davis State Park from 2:00 p.m. (???) through the evening meal (If I am not there at 2:00 p.m., please go ahead without me and I'll catch up later);
2.  The "Trunk or Treat" on October 31 is going to be big -- so we need more candy.  May I suggest the "golden rule" principle applies here:  "Give (they type of candy) unto others that you would have others give unto you."
3.  Please continue to pray for Dr. Travis and Sue as they deal with various health issues and other important matters.

In his book about Elijah, Churck Swindoll tells this story:

"Many years ago I called on a man in the Veterans's Hospital.  He had suffered a series of heart attacks and had undergone major surgery.  During his rehabilitation, he stayed at the dismal Veteran's Hospital.

The day I arrived to visit, I saw a touching scene.  This man had a young son, and during his confienemnt in the hospital, he had made a little wooden truck for his boy.  Since the boy was not allowed to go into the ward and visit his father, an orderly had brought the gift down to the child, who was waiting in front of the hospital with his mother.  The father was looking out a fifth-floor window, watching his son unwrap the gift.

The little boy opened the package and his eyes got wide when he saw that wonderful little truck.  He hugged it close to his chest.

Meanwhile, the father was walking back and forth waving his arms behind the windowpane, trying to get his son's attention.

The little boy put the truck down and reached up and hugged the orderly and thanked him for the truck.  And all the while the frustrated father was going through these dramatic gestures, trying to say, 'It's me, son.  I made that truck for you.  I gave that to you.  Look up here!'  I could almost read his lips.

Finally, the mother and the orderly turned the boy's attention up to that fifth-floor window.  It was then the boy cried, 'Daddy!  Oh, thank you!  I miss you, Daddy!  Come home, Daddy.  Thank you for my truck.'

And the father stood in the window with tears pouring down his cheeks.

How much like that child we are.  We are shut away in our cave of loneliness and discouragement, and then God brings along the gifts of rest and refreshment, wise counsel, and close, personal friends.  And we fall in love with the gifts, rather than the Giver!

He gives us a verse of Scripture, and we worship the Bible rather than the One who gave it.  He gives us a loving wife or husband or friend, and we fall more in love with the person than the One who gave us that important individual.  He gives us a good job, and we love the job more than we love Him.  And all the while He stands at the window and says, 'Look up here.  I gave that to you.'  He longs to have us look up and say, 'Oh, thank You, Father!  I miss You.  I want to be with You.'"

While going through life, as we pause to count our blessings, remember to "look up."

Press on.

Andrew

FW: Noah needs your help!

Sent: Friday, September 28, 2007 12:36 PM
Subject: Noah needs your help!

As you know, Brian & I have accepted a referral to adopt a little boy in Guatemala. His name is Noah Jonathan. Although we only have a handful of pictures of him, he has already filled our hearts and we have been eagerly anticipating his homecoming. Current political events both in the US and in Guatemala, have jeopardized our ability to complete our adoption. Rules and guidelines for international adoption will be greatly affected by the upcoming implementation of the Hague both in the US and Guatemala. We do not oppose the Hague implementation. What we oppose is the proposed halting of all adoptions in process on January 1, 2008. This could mean that Noah’s adoption process could extend many extra months or years, or worse yet, never happen at all. There are currently 5000 children in Guatemala who are in the same condition as Noah. Although they have no families in Guatemala, all 5000 children have families, waiting to bring them home to the US. Sadly, if these children do not get adopted, there is no system of care for them in Guatemala. Orphanages in Guatemala are few and far between, and will in no way be able to care for 5000 children, mostly under one year of age.

There is an organization called the Joint Council on International Children’s Services that is organizing a campaign to bombard Congressional offices, the US State Department, and UNICEF with calls and emails on October 8, 9 and 10, 2007, requesting that they take action to insure that these 5000 children get to come home. Please click on the link below to find out how you can help and what you need to say when you make your call or email.

http://www.jcics.org/Guatemala5000.htm#Participate

Please add these 4 things to your prayer list

  • 5000 Children in Guatemala,
  • their waiting US families,
  • the people in both Guatemalan and the US who are trying to make sure the children come home
  • and most importantly for the people who have the authority to do the right thing - to do it

I’m not a political activist. I’m just a new Mom that wants to bring home her son and I am asking all of my friends and family to help me.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would pass along this email to anyone you know that would be willing to help. Also if you know of people out of state who would help, that would mean more Congressmen are contacted about the plight of the Guatemala 5000.

Sincerely,
Jane Boley

P.S. Here is a picture of Noah…He is only 6 weeks old now and doesn’t have a voice yet. Please use yours to speak on his behalf.

Nursery List

Here you go guys! Sorry that I didn't have it to pass around yesterday......
Please note that we don't have enough to cover this Sunday (Oct. 7)! Several
of my "go-to" people have signed up to do full months in the nursery, so
some others are needed to "step up" and fill their shoes. I will not be
there to cover any empty spaces this Sunday (Oct. 7), so please respond and
let's not leave Mrs. Caroline hanging! They like to have all the names for
the month so that they can send out a note to you reminding you of your week
to serve. THANKS in advance for your service in this very imnportant
ministry to our church!

Help with Mission Friends 4 and 5 year olds!

From: Ben & Carolyn Self bcself@charter.net

URGENT NEED SITED!  Carolyn

Hey guys-

I was looking to see if anyone would be willing to help teach the 4/5 year old Mission Friends.  They are in desperate need of help!  Vickie Sisk is their teacher and she needs someone to teach with her.  There is currently nobody else with her.  They have 10 regular kids with potential every Wed. for 13 kids.  It is only from 6-7 every wed. night and they follow the school schedule.  I have stepped in to help temporarily, but they really need a full replacement.  Please let me know if you are willing!  Thanks

By the way if you have one under 2 there is child care available.  Mallory goes in there with Stephanie and she is wonderful!

Generosity

Hey Team!

As I have been thinking about the generosity of the "anonymous donor" who graciously provided our S.S. class with comfortable new chairs and a new lectern, it has brought a lot of things to my mind.

Could it be said that out of the overflow of the heart, the checkbook speaks?  Of course that is not in Scripture, but what is in Scripture is that "faith without works is dead" (James 4:17) and that when you give your alms (financial gifts), "do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you (Matthew 6:3-4).  There are many more passages that pertain to this act of faith, giving, and generosity, but you get the picture.

But the picture is even bigger!  Did you also know that another anonymous donor from our class gave the furniture for our new prayer room (see Scripture references above)?  Did you know that a great many of our class are serving faithfully and regularly in our children's ministry, youth ministry, tutoring ministry, leading/teaching classes, and in many, many other ways?

None of us is perfect and none of us has arrived, but it has been encouraging to me to think about all the different and many ways that you give, serve and try to live lives of obedience.  What's even more encouraging is that I am confident that I don't know even half of what so many of you are doing as mothers, fathers, friends, neighbors and in all of your other relationships.  The good news is that you are not doing what you are doing for the applause of men, but out of a spirit of faithfulness.  And at the end of the day, according to Scripture, your Father who sees in secret will reward you!

So . . . press on!
Andrew
