SelfStudy

Hey Team,

As we finish 2009 and get ready for what lies ahead in 2010, I wanted to let you know our game plan for the next several Sundays:

January 3

Ronnie Barnett is going to lead our class. The topic is extremely relevant for all of us and it will include a brief DVD presentation. Please come. You will be challenged, motivated and encouraged. Thanks, Ronnie.

January 10

We are going to have a discussion (Q and A) about how to live a Christian life -- at home, in the work place, etc. This will be a great opportunity for us to ask and ponder important questions that we have about this most important topic. It may continue the following week, January 17.

January 24

We will begin our study of the book of Daniel.

Eva and I love you and appreciate your friendship. May God continue to bestow His blessings upon you as you seek to walk with Him and know Him better.

Press on.

Caroling at the Challenge House (2)

Hey Team,

By way of a reminder, I want to extend a special invitation to you to join us for fun and fellowship as we go caroling in the Challenge House 2 (Bryan St.) neighborhood on

Tuesday, December 22 at 7:00 p.m.

We plan to meet at the Challenge House on Bryan St. at 7:00 p.m., and after some refreshments, we will do some caroling to folks who probably have not heard or seen many carolers in their day. I realize this is a very busy time, but would love to have any who want to join us. We also hope and expect to have some neighbors join us, including one who graduated from my drug court who is going to serve as our guide.

Hope to see you Sunday.
Press on.

I know this is a busy time with a lot of Christmas "to do" lists. With your permission, may I suggest a few more additions:
Give without expecting anything
Forgive an enemy (or a friend)
Say something positive about somebody
Laugh a little
Laugh a little more
Share another's burden
Keep a promise
Hug somebody
Apologize if you are wrong
Don't take things that don't belong to you
Tell somebody what you appreciate about them
Thank God --from whom all blessings flow.
Merry Christmas.

SelfStudy : Virus - UPS/FedEx/DHL Delivery Failure

From Randy - State Network Analyst:

virus5With the holidays, viruses and spyware are an unfortunate fact of life. Firewalls along with updated and properly installed Antivirus software are an absolute must these days. But you can still do some malicious code blocking yourself.

I received the second email message today with the header “UPS Delivery Problem”. The message has an attachment with a very complicated filename (UPS_FILEMN2348234.zip). The key is “.zip”. Once you open this it contains a file that is executable and that installs a virus on your computer. So you must participate to infect your PC with this virus.

This virus has been circulating for over a year. But it seems to be gaining some ground currently. You can go to http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/ups.asp to read more about it; what it does and how to clean it off. But the easiest cure for this one is to delete it.

And remember, unless you know someone is purposely sending an attachment that ends with “.zip” or .”exe”, delete any messages containing attachments with these filename extensions.

Self Study

Hey Team,

A few quick thoughts about our study this past Sunday:

If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get out of the Boat

1. The wind does not stop blowing when we're water-walking. Why do we have a tendency to think that if we trust God, life will always be easy? It won't. However, like Peter, we have the option of either (A) keeping our eyes on Jesus or (B) becoming distracted by the wind (world).

2. When the wind blows, Jesus is still right there. God's most common command in the Bible is "do not be afraid." He said that to Peter, and he says that to us.

3. God wants us to keep walking even when we face difficult obstacles. Every day fear and trust battle for control of the human heart. One of them will win. Which one will you choose?

When you are not at Sunday School, we miss you. What is it that you may be missing when you are not there? Hope to see you soon.

Jason Arnold needs some assistance

Jason Arnold needs some assistance.

We are having tree cut down by the CLC this week. Jason Arnold wanted the wood. However, since the accident he is not able to do the work of cutting the tree and hauling it.

We need men with chain saws, trucks/trailers and able to help pick up wood and restack it at Jason's house.

Come Saturday morning to the CLC at 9:00 AM.

S.S.

Hey Team,

Three things:

1. Sunday School

As always, your participation is what makes our class so special. Whether you particpate by offering a comment or a question, or simply be faithfully being there, I want to say "thank you." This past Sunday, I especially appreciate Amy Watson's willingness to share her personal testimony about getting out of the boat. I could sense that so many were relating to what she was sharing. Thanks, Amy.

2. Student Ministry

Please plan to attend business meeting on Wednesday evening as we discuss and consider important issues related to the future of our student ministry.

3. Christmas Party

Mark your calendars for the date of our Sunday School class Christmas party, Friday, December 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Selfs. As always, we hope you will come and bring some food to share. This is always a fun time and so far no one has stayed past my bedtime (good job, team).

S.S./Tanya Crevier

Hey Team,

Don't forget, everybody is invited to come to the YMCA tonight (Thursday) at 7:00 p.m. to see Tanya Crevier, the world's greatest basketball handler. Of course, that title does not begin to describe who she is, what she does, or the power of her message. Are you tired, frustrated, discouraged about something, then you won't want to miss Tanya. Trust me, you will be blessed if you come. I promise it will be one of those, "I didn't really want to go, but I am so glad I did" experiences.

On Sunday we will continue our series, "If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat."

Hope to see you tonight and Sunday.

Hey Team,

Thanks for your participation in our study of Philemon.  I thought it was an especially good study with a lot of practical applications to our lives and how we relate to others.

We are now going to begin a study entitled, "If You Want to Walk on Water, You've to Get Out of the Boat," based on John Ortberg's book by the same name.  This Sunday we are going to study the text, Matthew 14:25-32, and see a very brief introductory DVD.  In subsequent weeks, we will have a DVD presentation followed by discussion.  It promises to be an interesting study.  I hope you can join us.

Prayer Request

Hey Team,

Many of you know Lisa Pinson's father, Bill Quarles.  He has been a very faithful member of our church for many years, and over the years I would rank him at the top of the list when it comes to visiting others and caring for members of our congregation.  Although at age 97 he has slowed down some, he still is in better overall physical condition than most of the rest of us.

Mr. Quarles has been diagnosed with some form of cancer in his chest area.  He is scheduled for surgery Tuesday morning, October 13.  Please be in prayer for the Quarles and Pinson families regarding this matter.

Andrew,
Jack and his friend Kyle Smithson were in an accident on Wednesday night.  Jack has only scratches and a mild concussion.  Kyle is in Jewish Hospital.  There was severe damage to two of the fingers of his left hand.  The doctors were able to save a portion of the ring finger but had to amputate the pinkie, there was too much damage to the bone and knuckle to save it.  They are very lucky to be alive. The dune buggy had a rollover cage and they were buckled in. That probably saved their lives since the cart rolled multiple times.
The main concern now is for Kyle's hand to remain free from infection.  He will remain in Louisville for 3-5 days.  If all goes well, Kyle will over time have several surgeries to reconstruct and cosmetically repair the hand. Time will tell.
Would you please be in prayer for Kyle and for his extended family, (John, Shahri and Mallory). Also, for the kids that were at the cookout and the adults that were in charge, that arrived at the scene and were able to provide help and comfort.    Thanks so much.  Lacy

Subject: Julia Stampp

Andrew,

Over a year ago and a couple of times since then I requested prayers from our class for Julia Stampp.  Julia, you may recall, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer just before she turned 4 years old.  She underwent chemo for a year which ended about a month ago.  Julia is now 5.  This morning her father Tim called me at around 7am to tell me that her latest scans came back clear.  They will be removing her chemo port which has been in for over a year.  They will monitor her every three months for a period of time and will go to every six months if everything remains clear.  Tim stated the recurrence rate of this cancer is about 49% so let's pray that Julia is in that 51% group.  Julia had dropped to the 5th percentile in terms of her weight but is already back to the 25th percentile since ceasing chemo treatments.

Anyway, this is such a blessing and such great news.  I had asked Tim early on if he was ok with me sharing Julia's condition with my Sunday school class and asking for their prayers so he knows that people here in Hoptown have been praying for Julia and her family.  He asked me to give his thanks to my class so if you would pass this on to the class I would appreciate it.

Thanks to everyone who has prayed for Julia, and please continue to pray that she will be in that 51% non-recurrence group.

Take care,  Sam

Update on Lane Ann Miller

Friends,

Lane Ann had surgery on her colon yesterday to remove the tumor(s).  Unfortunately, as they suspected, the cancer has spread to the liver and the lymph nodes.  They will meet with the oncologist in the next several days to explore treatment options.  Tim is a very pragmatic person and he clearly understands the magnitude and implications of the diagnosis.

As you know, Tim and Lane Ann's life is a testimony to their great faith in our Lord.  Their faith and love and devotion to Him remains strong and steadfast, even in the midst of this terrible storm.  I spoke with Tim this morning and he told me that late last night the Lord gave him Psalm 30:1-3 which says:

I will extol Thee, O Lord, for Thou has lifted me up and hast not let my enemies rejoice over me.  O Lord my God, I cried to Thee for help, and Thou didst heal me.  O Lord, Thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol; Thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

Tim does not subscribe to "name it and claim it" theology.  However, he does know and believe that God is able to do what He wills.  Above all, they want the name of Jesus to be lifted up and praised through every experience of their lives -- in whatever way He chooses.  Please join me in praying with them and for them.

Friends,
It is with a heavy heart that we share a prayer request for and on behalf of our good friends, Tim and Lane Ann Miller. Many of you know that Tim and Lane Ann are former members of our church and our S.S. class. Lane Ann continues to teach Bible classes at HCA, and Tim is presently serving in an interim pastorate. Of course, this is in addition to their primary calling to make disciples which they do very effectively through their ministry, DTN (Disciple the Nations).
Tim called tonight to tell us that Lane Ann has cancer. She has been experiencing abdominal pain for some time, and they just found a tumor in her colon. Of greater concern, however, is that the cancer has spread outside the colon and into the liver. Lane Ann is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow (Friday) at St. Thomas in Nashville. The surgery will involve the colon only, and then they will discuss treatment options depending upon how the surgery goes.
Please join me in praying for Lane Ann, Tim, and their four children. May our God grant them peace and comfort during this difficult time.
Press on.

FBC family,

It's been a difficult and emotionally challenging week, but God is good! Jason is now home and we look forward to getting rest and recuperating. We thank you all very much for your thoughts and prayers and the support from Andrew's, Carolyn's and the Meacheam's Sunday school classes as well as the individual needs that have been met. We'd appreciate the continual prayer for Jason's speedy recovery. Jason is in good spirits considering the loss of his leg just above the knee.

At this time we still need time to rest and readjust thus we ask for no visitors, no calls for at least a week, and no meals. Jason's pain meds put him to sleep as well as cause nausea. And visitors/calls would prohibit his rest. We would like to suggest that anyone considering a future monetary contribution please redirect their support by donating blood or giving to FBC. Thank you for honoring our request. When you are at church on Sunday, you can ask David and Jessica Shepard for updates on Jason's progress.

With God's continued grace, we look forward to returning to church in several weeks.

Again thank you for all your support and prayers, we are truly blessed!

Heidi and Jason

Hey Andrew,

Since Sharon couldn’t be there last Sunday I thought I would test her knowledge and found that my wife is very astute. I asked her if she was familiar with “Philemon”. Without hesitation she said “it’s the stuff you cough up when you have the crud”. I thought I was the funny one ………….

Also, thanks for your generosity with regard to our monthly offering. Not only were we able to meet the need I mentioned to you, but we were also able to help another family in our church with an unexpected need. Thanks again for being a generous group of people.

Fw: Jason Arnold Update

Below is an update from Jessica Shepare regarding Jason Arnold (her brother-in-law). Please continue to remember all of them in your prayers.

Subject: Jason Arnold Update

Hello everyone!
I've had several ask for an update today. So I thought it might be easier to send an email to everyone at once. Jason is scheduled for surgery this morning at 11:30 (Friday). They WILL amputate his leg. We are asking everyone to pray that they will be able to save the knee. The knee was damaged as well and the orthopedic surgeon was unsure if it will be able to be saved. They will make that decision in surgery after looking at the knee.

After much consultation with the doctors and surgeons, it was determined that they would not be able to save the lower part of the leg regardless. There is just too much damage and too much of the leg is not there.

We anticipate his surgery to last most of the afternoon/early evening.

For those of you wanting to visit them, please be aware that for the most part it has been us Shepards (Heidi's family) and his parents in the waiting room. The ICU has strict visiting hours. When the ICU has been open for visiting hours, Heidi has been trying to spend the time with Jason. When the hours are closed, we've been trying to encourage Heidi to go to the hotel to rest. Another request for prayer would be for Heidi, she is truly physically exhausted from all of this. I just want any visitors to be aware that they may not necessarily catch Heidi but I know we've all appreciated the outpouring of love and support that so many of you have already shown to them. She is truly grateful for all of the support they've had! I'm sure once he has had more time to recover and is moved out of ICU, it will be easier to visit with Heidi or Jason. We will keep you updated on his progress.

Thanks everyone!

I have very much appreciated, and thoroughly enjoyed, our class discussions the last several weeks as we have gone through the process of evaluating our S.S. class. Prayer Requests and Thanks

Hey Team,

**Please remember to pray for the Stooksburys as they travel to PA later this week for Amy's father's funeral.

**Please remember to pray for the Liebe family and Mike and Cheri Taylor. Tuesday is Josh's (the Liebes' son and Cheri's brother) first birthday since his tragic death.

**Thanks to the Browns, the Watsons, and Leigh Ann Stewart for answering the clarion call to serve in the nursery this past Sunday (and to all the rest of you who faithfully do so).

**Thanks to Tory Pinson for sharing during the morning worship service about his and the church's mission efforts. Well done, Tory!

**As a follow up to our discussion in S.S., as best I can tell, most of the research that helps to form the conclusions in the book, Essential Church, was done with young adults between the ages of 18 and 31, who had attended a Protestant church at least one year as teenagers (i.e. not exclusively Southern Baptist churches).

More to come.

S.S.

Hey Team,

We desperately need nursery workers for this Sunday. Although we have a number of folks signed up for the last two Sundays of the month, we don't have anybody signed up for this Sunday. Please let me know if you can help.

Also, please remember Amy Stooksbury and her family. Her father died earlier this week after an extended illness.

Hope to see you Sunday as we continue our evaluation of our Sunday School class.

S.S.

Hey Team,
Hope you are all well.
Thanks again to Eva for a great study on the book of Ruth. I know, I know, I am a little (O.K. a lot) partial to her, but I think she always does a great job. My impression is that everybody else who participated in the study felt the same way. Hopefully we will be able to get her to do it again sometime.
I am thankful for and blessed by my spouse -- and if you will stop and think about it, you are blessed by your spouse too. Maybe we need to count the many reasons why, and then tell them, thank them, and love them in their language.
We need all hands on deck starting this Sunday as we begin our S.S. class Retreat/Evaluation/Self-Study (pun intended). It is always good -- in all situations and life experiences -- to examine, reexamine, evaluate, reevaluate, etc. And that's what we are going to do starting this Sunday regarding our S.S. What and how and why and . . . can we make S.S. more meaningful, etc.
Hope to see you there!

SelStudy - First Baptist Sunday School

Hey Team,

Hope things are going well for you as the summer winds down.

Eva will finish our study of Ruth in the next couple of weeks and then we will have our in-class "retreat." This will be a good time to evaluate anything and everything about our class and chart our course for the future. I pray it will be a time of self-examination, challenge, and conviction. Let's be open to God's leading and see what happens.

Hope to see you Sunday.

Dawn Ray, Paul's wife, fell on the 19th while trying to help put the solar cover on the pool and broke 5 ribs. Needless to say, she is staying at home and doing as little as possible.
I just ask for prayer of healing for Dawn. Patience and understanding for Paul and the 3 kids.
Thanks,

Prayer Request

Please be in prayer for Mary Wood's son, Paul Michael, who was involved in a very serious automobile accident last night. Paul Michael was initially taken to JSMC, and then flown by helicopter to Vanderbilt. The young man who was in the vehicle with Paul Michael, Lee King, was killed. Lee is the son of Chuck King and Tammy Gilkey.

Preliminary reports indicate that it was a one-vehicle accident, and it is not known at this time which of the young men was driving.

Please be in prayer for these families.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hey Team,

Last night at Business Meeting, upon a recommendation from the Personnel Ministry Team, the church approved the position of a part-time (16-20 hours/wk.) Nursery/Preschool Director. Hopefully this position will be filled in the next month or so. This is a great development and underscores the commitment our church is making to young families and their children.

Bro. Rick also indicated that the Personnel Ministry Team is exploring various ways to address our Children's Ministry -- another very important need. Please join me in supporting Bro. Rick as he provides much needed leadership with regard to these and other matters affecting our church. As he continues to prayerfully evaluate and assess the needs of our congregation, I believe very strongly that he has us heading in the right direction.

Thanks again to Eva for leading our study of the book of Ruth. Please join us this Sunday as we continue that study.

Hey Team,

Several things as we prepare to celebrate our nation's birthday:

1. Thanks again to Mark G., Lisa M., Tim B., and Beth P. for the testimonies they shared this past Sunday. What an awesome worship service. It takes a lot of courage to do what they did. We thank them for their willingness to be vulnerable and to share from their hearts.

2. Thanks also to those of you who shared personal things following their testimonies. These kinds of experiences allow us to get to know each other better, to understand each other better, and hopefully to encourage and love each other better. Thanks!

3. What a great blessing it was to have the Barnett family join our church. Although they have been a very real part of us for some time, "welcome" to Ronnie, Shawna, Peyton, and Bailey.

4. Don't forget that my favorite Bible teacher of all time (who also happens to be my favorite wife of all time) will begin our study of Ruth this Sunday. You won't want to miss it. Please come.

5. Finally, remember that we are having a churchwide fellowship lunch after the morning worship service this Sunday. The church will provide the meat and drinks. Please bring a vegetable, salad or dessert (you know the drill).

Press on.

SelfStudy - FBC

Hey Team,

I am very excited about what we are planning for Sunday School over the next several weeks!

First, this Sunday, June 28, four of our class members will share brief testimonies. Each time we have done this previously it has been a very meaningful time. I am excited about those who have agreed to share. Please be praying for them and please come to hear and support them.

Then, beginning July 5, we have a very special treat. My favorite Bible teacher (and favorite person in general) will be leading a study of the book of Ruth. Yes, I'm talking about my wife, Eva. Many of you women have been in studies with her before, but I suspect most of the men have not. Please plan to come. It's going to be great!

Hope to see you this Sunday. Invite a friend or neighbor to come with you.

SelfStudy Sunday School

Hey Team,

A few things to think about as we are now knee deep in what will be a very short summer for most:

1. VBS wraps up tomorrow (Friday). Thanks to Shirley, Pat S. all those who worked, and especially to the children who came for making this a wonderful week. As usual, I suspect there are some children who are thinking about their relationship with God a little differently after this week. Let's pray for them, and let's thank God for those who have taught them, played with them, fed them, etc.

2. We are still having Sunday School every week and we would love for you to come when you can, including this Sunday as Mike Beck continues to lead our study on "The Baptist Faith and Message." I know some of you are going to be out of town on vacation this weekend and we hope you have a good, safe, relaxing time. For everybody else, we would love to see you Sunday.

3. Finally, church giving typically takes a hit during the summer months, but the church expenses remain basically unchanged.

Even though we may miss some time from church this summer, let's do our best to remain faithful in our giving.

Prayer Request - Keegan Mangels

Some of you may know James and Lisa Mangels who live in Cadiz.

Kahle called to let us know that their 10 year old son, Keegan, was killed while riding his bicycle approximately a mile from home on Sunday. Apparently he hit a utility trailer being pulled by a pickup truck. Keegan was going to be a 6th grader at Trigg Co. Middle School this fall.

Please pray for this family in their time of need.

Subject: FW: Update on Julia

Hey Andrew,

This is an update on the little girl I have requested prayers for a couple of times. She has really been put through the mill and still has a long row to hoe. Please continue to pray for her. Her name is Julia Stampp and her father is Tim. Julia was four when this all started. I don't know her birth date. She is probably five now. Whether it is good news or bad, it breaks my heart every time I get a report from Tim that a precious child is going through this and that the outcome is so uncertain.

I appreciate the prayer support.

Thanks, Sam

PS: Feel free to share this with our class if you want.

Sam and Eric- Julia is getting better. She has been on chemo for 9 months now and we are hoping to be able to stop in July. The sibling disease to what Julia has, and for which data is available, is multi-system Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (Julia has systemic JXG with very little data available) and it has a recurrence rate of 49% between 1 and 5 years with a median of 1.2 years. We have to pray that Julia is in the 51%. Our next path will be dealing with the problems caused by the damage to her pituitary gland and the effects of 12 months of chemotherapy. Just wanted to thank you for your prayers and keep you posted. Thanks, Tim
